Recently Google announced the official introduction of a new metric, the site speed. Rumors about this metric have been reported as far as October 2009, only now Google confirming it as a relevant metric. Some viewed this as a move towards the goal of having control of relevant people statistics, reinforced by the introduction of Google DNS, fearing it will mark the introduction of Google's webhosting business, but in our opinion this was a long time coming. Site speed should be a factor of rewarding those websites that make an effort of providing fast and accurate content to the users, and is more linked to efficient programming than pure host speeds. In the last few years, we've seen a somewhat leveling tendency in hosting speeds, as bandwidth grows less expensive. The metric is far from a make or break metric, it's relevance is marked by Google at less than 1%, but it could be the edge you need in some fierce competitions, where every inch matters.
